Enchanted Forest Mandalas

crochet patterns, mandalas, doily, coasters, how to crochet,

January Blues

For some people, January is all doom and gloom.  All the festivities of Christmas and New Year are now over; there's talk of New Year resolutions and some are actually doing a dry-January. There are those who wish winter was over and wanting it to get warmer, because all those wet, windy, cold, sunless short days are driving them to depression.

Whereas, for me, well I just LOVE January, it is a time of peace and quiet, a time to relax and chill out in our little cave, a time to hibernate, I love it!

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mandalas, doily, coasters,

I love the time to myself, I love the cold, wet weather which forces me to stay indoors, I can rummage to my hearts content, read as much as I like, draw, crochet, knit, nap, try out new recipes, rearrange my drawers and cupboards, discard stuff I no longer need or don't use, and basically declutter.

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mandalas, doily, coasters,

Best of all, it is a great time to take sunrise photos (when the sun is visible) because sunrise is as late as 8am.  This is the perfect time of year for resting and recouping!  A time of reflection without distractions! Absolutely perfect!

Crochet Discoveries

I managed to sort out my stash of yarn and stack of unfinished projects, and have decided to complete some crochet items I had worked on and put aside for another day for whatever reason, and now here is the first crochet project I decided to complete.

ENCHANTED FOREST Mandalas

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mandalas, doily, coasters,

I started this creation about two (2) summers ago.  It was a WIP (work-in-progress) for so long only because I would take my time to decide what stitch pattern to do next, so I would only do it when the inspiration took me there!  I was also using up my scraps of DMC Petra 5, so it had a totally different look, in the original work I used a total of six (6) colours and even had more rows, but for the NEW look I excluded the last four (4) rows to keep it a reasonable size.  Then I chose the colours of peppermint and avocado to complement my sofa cushions, so you are quite welcome to chose any colour you prefer to complement your home decore.

Here are the PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY:  Easy Intermediate
SIZES:  Three (3) sizes - A = small; B = medium; C = large
MEASUREMENTS:  approx. A = 13cm (5in);  B = 23cm (9in);  C = 41cm (16in)
YARN USED:  Wendy Supreme Luxury Cotton 4ply ● 100% Mercerized Cotton ● 100g/267m/292yds ● Shades: MC Peppermint (1831)  CC Avocado (1826) ● 1 ball of each
NOTIONS:  3mm hook, Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES:  You need to know how to colour change and crochet in the round. Instructions in this pattern are for three (3) mandalas, using two (2) colours, colour changes are mentioned in the pattern. This written pattern has accompanying photographs at the end of the written instructions.

Deep in the Enchanted Forest a tiny little spider creates amazingly intricate, delicate and colourful spider webs. Enchanted Forest Mandalas were inspired by these spider webs, and now you too can decorate your home with vibrant coloured spider web designs.  Come along and have a play and have some fun!

ENCHANTED FOREST Mandalas Crochet Pattern is available in USA American Crochet Terms and UK British Crochet Terms.
Please select the correct terminology when purchasing your pattern.

BRIGHTEN UP WITH COLOUR

crochet coasters doilys pink green orange purple

Oh these grey, grey days, hard to put a smile upon my face days,

nothing but grey, cold, wind and rain...

crochet patterns, how to crochet, coasters, doily, home decor,

can't wait for spring, where's the colour in my world?

crochet patterns, how to crochet, coasters, doily, home decor,
Hidden in the darkness, these fabulous colours appear, perfect for happy and vibrant crochet fun, to brighten up my gloomy world!

You can never be too busy to have some fun with happy colours.

AND with Easter festivities coming up soon, I have decided we need loads more happy colours indoors to make up for the grey gloom outdoors.

Here is what I have been playing with: brightly coloured coastersin three (3) sizes.

crochet coasters spring blossoms orange purple green pink

Now you can make them with the King Cole Bamboo Cotton as I have, or use any other colourful thread you prefer to use, so the smaller the hook and yarn/thread thickness the smaller the size.

You can have loads of fun with these, changing colour every round, every other round, or only change colour once, it's all up to you.

Let's talk crochet coaster design:  inspiration came from the colours of the bamboo cotton, the coaster needed a spring feel.  Spring means colourful blossoms, something we don't see during the winter months.

And I wanted to keep it simple, so a basic little blossom edge, around a simple colourful centre.  So easy!

SEASIDE Coasters

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, coasters,

Cheerful seaside colours!

The colour of the water -  deep blue, sea green, turquoise -  greens and blues the world over.

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, coasters,

Seaside colours are my inspiration for these crochet coasters and matching doily placemat. What was that saying? Blue and green, never to be seen.  However, in today's fashion world it seems these colours are everywhere. I really love the finished look of these blue and green colour combinations they go well together.

Just take a look around at nature, the colour combinations are absolutely inspiring!

Look at a peacock, their feathers are magnificent in hues of blue and green, absolutely fabulous! OK so there are other colours between the blue and green but hey they do work well together.

Crochet Coaster Pattern "SEASIDE"

I am releasing this SEASIDE Coaster Pattern for FREE and next week I will include the accompanying pattern for the SEASIDE Doily Pattern.

I know, it's taken me a while to get back to writing up these patterns for release however, this past week has been full of website, pattern, document and photo re-organizing. And what a job it is, I am still grasping with the enormous task put before me and the call of the hook is always beckoning.

Just Clone Me!

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, hats, scarves, mittens, slippers, afghans,

I want to be cloned

Why isn't there another me? Another Barbara who can spend all the time she likes on the laptop keying in crochet patterns, sorting through photos, tagging everything (and I mean tagging EVERYTHING) and just getting everything organised?

I would like to spend my day exploring new crochet ideas, crocheting, playing with a variety of yarns, creating at my leisure, and jotting down pattern notes, which could be deciphered and turned into written patterns by the other me.  Where is this other me?

CROCHET PROJECTS

Some days I look around and I have a stash of projects all finished and a notebook full of my scribbles and notes, and no inclination at all to sit down at the laptop and key it all in - I need help, I prefer to play with my crochet hook, not sit at the keyboard recording the steps!

PREVIEW of PATTERNS

Anyway here is a little snippet of some crochet patterns I am working on and when the urge to sit at the laptop for a few hours to write out the patterns occurs, they will be available for purchase and few will be FREE.

1. SEASIDE Crochet Doily and Coasters

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, coasters, doilies, home decore,

This crochet doily and coasters set will be a great addition to my festive table come Christmas. I love the blues with the green, however, I may try making a set in a range of festive-type colours such as - yellow, pomegranate, fuschia and green. Wow it's only August and I am already thinking of Christmas!

PATTERN DETAILS:

Simple crochet doily and coasters pattern, colours of the sea, you can make them as colourful and festive as you like.

Two simple coaster patterns – both same size, but with a variation to number of rows worked and the stitch sequence. For that eclectic look!

YARN: Patons 100% Cotton DK
HOOK: 4.5mm
MEASUREMENTS:  Doily 11.5ins (29cms) diameter; Coasters 4.25ins (11cms) diameter

I just love the amazing colour range Patons has available in this DK cotton yarn.  A good substitute yarn is Wendy Supreme Luxury Cotton DK.

2. Crochet Mobius (Neckwarmer) and Mittens

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, mittens, headbands, scarves,

Basically my thoughts have been focused on Christmas and the cold weather mainly because this summer has been lacking in warmth, just a wee bit. I am already thinking mittens and neckwarmers and doing a bit of work on my crochet MAN stuff, like crochet mobius for men with matching mittens. What do you think?

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, mittens, headbands, scarves,

Unfortunately for this little project the yarn I used was a left-over from last winter and definitely a yarn I would not recommend, it's by Sirdar called Tweedie Chunky 40% Wool, 15% Alpaca and 45% Acrylic (I think it has been discontinued). I don't like the texture when it's crocheted - the feel is just too r-u-b-b-e-r-y, yep that's right rubbery. Why do they even bother making this awful stuff?

Anyway I made the mobius and one mitten and I hate it so much I have binned it, yeah it's that bad, honesty I couldn't even bring myself to feel comfortable giving it to a charity shop!

THERE IS NO PATTERN for this disaster!  I totally gave up trying to make it in another yarn, I was so put off by the texture and feel of this yarn. C'est la vie!

3. Chunky Mobius for THE MAN

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, mittens, headbands, scarves,

Here is my favourite mobius pattern for men SHADOW named after the yarn I used.  It's a really nice chunky yarn Patons Shadow Tweed 56% Wool 40% Acrylic 4% Viscose. It's not exactly my favourite all natural fibre yarn, but my darling suffers with wool itchiness, no matter how it comes, merino wool, cashmere, or alpaca, you name it, he finds it itchy! go figure! So this is a nice bearable, non-itchy yarn for him to wear.  For substitute yarns check out this website: YARNSUB

SHADOW Crochet Mobius is a great Christmas gift, it can be made with only one skein (using 7mm hook) and Patons has a nice assortment of colours available in this yarn.  UPDATE: now discontinued check with YARNSUB website for substitute yarns.

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, mittens, headbands, scarves,

I am seriously thinking about making a few more of these as quick gifts for Christmas, however even though it is only 56% wool it is still HAND WASH only, which can be an issue for some.

MORE CREATIVE IDEAS

There will also be a simple pattern coming soon of how to make a mobius headband with some basic shaping involved. I have made it with cotton yarn and before I release the new pattern want to also make it with wool. So it's something you will have to wait and see when I next post my blog. HERE IS A SNEAK PEAK PHOTO.

Well that's all for now, I am busy crocheting myself another sleeping beanie, oh yeah!
