BEEHIVE BEANIE Free Crochet Pattern

Resurrecting Old Crochet Hats

In the mid-1980's I remember my Polish mother-in-law, Henryka, showing me how to crochet in a spiral and how to add contrast surface-crochet. [Originally the surface-crochet was made using a slip stitch, however, over the years I have changed that to (slip stitch, ch1) instead, which I think is way better].

Nearly twenty (20) years later in early 2004, I began making and selling these spiralling crochet hats along with my other crochet and knit accessories in a local shop in the Northern Rivers of NSW.

Seven (7) years later, Beehive Beanie was released in 2011 as a free crochet pattern on Ravelry and today (June 2018) I have revamped the written pattern by adding step-by-step photos, updated the format and added guidelines for sizing. Please note - the updated pdf pattern is available from my online shop with RavelryCraftsy

Adaptable Pattern

I love the fact you can use the suggested yarn and hook in this pattern, or you can follow the pattern instructions and use any other yarn and hook, by simply adapting the stitch count and number of rounds to match the head circumference you wish to make.

You can simply make beanies to suit all ages and all head sizes and you can be as creative as you want by using different colours and yarns. The result will be a spiral beanie with contrast surface-crochet resulting in a beehive-look hat which is simply perfect for spring or autumn. To make it warmer for winter I tend to add a crocheted cotton lining.

Favourite Yarns

You can use your favourite yarns to make the Beehive Beanie, simply adapt the pattern to the yarn and hook you will be using.

In this photo-tutorial, the beanie has been crocheted using yarns from my stash of Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool and Wendy Aran with Wool - both come in 400g balls, as I still have loads left even after I had knit a Crazy Stripe Jumper and a Crazy Stripe Hat.

If you want to crochet a similar hat size using same or similar yarn, please remember to check the YARNSUB website, to get the best match.

SUBSTITUTE YARN: Any similar Aran yarn. Always check with YARNSUB website to get the best match.

TENSION: 12sts to 4in (10cm) in dc stitch

NOTIONS: 5mm hook, Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES: Hat is worked in a spiral, top down. Instructions in this pattern are for a two (2) colour hat. Photographs accompany the written instructions of this pattern.

Before you begin:
• read through the pattern to the end;
• check your head size;
• decide whether you want a snug fit or loose fit hat;
• select yarn and hook size;
• crochet a swatch 5in (12.7cm) by 5in (12.7cm) in double crochet;
• count the number of stitches, over 4in (10cm) in the middle of the swatch;
• now you can calculate how many stitches you will need to fit the head circumference.

After you have crocheted the Crown of the Hat continue with the Body of the Hat adjusting the number of rounds accordingly. You can use the Child and Adult Hat Sizes Charts below as a guide.

Remember everything depends on your tension, hook size, type of yarn, crochet stitches and the individual's head shape, sometimes you may need a shorter/longer length or smaller/larger circumference. Nothing is set in concrete!

Hope you all enjoy making your Beehive Beanie!

Have a play and have some fun with different yarn colours and different yarn weights. Also if you tend to crochet looser you can always use a smaller hook size.

Enjoy!
