AMETHYST Winter Hat

crochet patterns, how to crochet, hats, beanies, winter hats, men, women,

WINTER IS COMING!

No matter how many hats I have for winter, every autumn I feel the need for a BRAND NEW HAT for the coming winter, and this year it is no different. There is always room for another warm hat to be added to my collection of hats. Don't you agree?

Yarn Talk

For this my first crochet hat for winter I am using King Cole RIOT Chunky, which I bought a couple of weeks ago.  A wool mix yarn 30% Wool and 70% Acrylic with a splash of colourful multi-tonal shades and I chose the purple mix, called Rhinestone (Shade: 1692 Rhinestone), closest to my favourite colour.  The Riot Chunky yarn comes in 100g balls so you only need one (1) ball to make this winter hat. As you can see in the photo the gradual colour change in the yarn has made the hat look as though I changed colour in every round, I just love this yarn!

You can substitute the yarn if you wish, just remember to check the YARNSUB website, to get the best match.

New Winter Hat

AMETHYST Winter Hat is the name of my new design for winter 2017 the colours remind me of my favourite gemstone of the same name, which I always wear around my neck.  This chunky yarn crochet hat is going to be lovely and warm, the yarn label recommends 6mm hook, however, I have used 5mm hook for a denser fabric and I have also included a cotton lining to prevent any possible itchiness from the wool blend yarn, as well as making the hat warmer. Of course, the cotton lining is optional you can make and wear the hat as is, I just prefer it with a lining.

ELDERBERRY Mobius Crochet Pattern

crochet mobius, cowl, infinity scarf, neckwarmer, crochet patterns, how to crochet,

End of Summer

Here in the Northern Hemisphere the autumn equinox (22 September) signifies the end of long summer days and the beginning of the longer nights, it's a time of harvest and the beginning of cooler temperatures and for me a time to think of warm and cozy crochet and knit projects.

Yarn Talk

My first crochet designs for autumn/winter are based on the yarns I purchased a couple of weeks ago, namely King Cole RIOT Chunky and King Cole RIOT DK

You can substitute the yarn if you wish, just remember to check the YARNSUB website, to get the best match.

LoveCrochet

crochet mobius, cowl, infinity scarf, neckwarmer, crochet patterns, how to crochet,

What caught my eye was the "riot of colourful multi-tonal shades". The yarn is 70% acrylic and 30% wool blend and comes in 100g balls, which makes it perfect for making hats and scarves, because in most cases you could get away with using just one (1) ball.

crochet mobius, cowl, infinity scarf, neckwarmer, crochet patterns, how to crochet,

I must admit I am not a big fan of acrylic yarns, however I don't mind using the wool and acrylic blends, especially when there is a need for it, for example, I love the softness of the yarn, or the colours are just what I was looking for, or it needs to be easy care and easy wear.

New Crochet Designs

My first design for Autumn 2017 is a crochet mobius called ELDERBERRY because the Riot yarn colours remind me of all the colourful berries we see on our walks in the countryside, like rowan berries, hawthorn berries, elderberries and many others which flourish at this time of the year, and their abundance is simply mesmerising. Yes I love autumn!

Autumn is a time to enjoy walking in the woodlands and observing nature's magic, the changing colours of the leaves and best of all a time for preparing for winter with lots of crocheting and knitting.

crochet mobius, cowl, infinity scarf, neckwarmer, crochet patterns, how to crochet,

So for the ELDERBERRY Mobius I crocheted with the King Cole Riot DK (Shade: 409 Funky) and a 4mm hook, the focus was on a delicate design pattern which would display the changing colours in the yarn and hopefully look a bit like autumn berries, in my favourite purple colours.

PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY:  Easy Intermediate

MEASUREMENTS:  Length 40in (102cm) Width 7in (18cm)

SIZES:  One (1) size

YARN USED:  KING COLE Riot DK (Shade: 409 Funky) ● 8ply ● 70% Acrylic 30% Wool ● 100g ● 322yd (294m)

YARDAGE: Approx.  322yd (294m)

NOTIONS:  4mm hook, Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES:  Mobius is worked in continuous rounds, working either side of your foundation row.  Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of the pattern.

This pattern is written in USA AMERICAN Crochet Terms.

Please Note: You can make this mobius shorter or longer as well as wider if you wish (hints in pattern). However be aware you will definitely need more than one ball if you make a longer or wider scarf.  Also I found that the one ball of yarn didn't weigh exactly 100g so I don't think I got the total length of yarn as stated on yarn label, therefore I needed a second ball of yarn to finish the optional decorative edge on the scarf.

Photo below is without the optional decorative edge you only need one ball of yarn for this size.

THISTLE Shoulder Bag Crochet Pattern

crochet patterns, bags, shoulder bags, v-stitch,

THISTLE Shoulder bag is based on a vintage 1970's crochet stitch. This crazy take on the V-stitch appeared mainly in summer garment design using only one colour.

LIGHTWEIGHT CROCHET BAG

I love this crochet stitch, it is easy and quick, and when you add colour to each row, you are rewarded with a fantastic looking piece of fabric, and what better way to display this crazy V-stitch than including it into this delicate and lightweight crochet shoulder bag.

I have called this shoulder bag pattern THISTLE because the colours remind me of all the thistles I witnessed growing all over Scotland. You may know that the thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286). Did you also know that in the language of flowers, the thistle (like the burr) is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth?

CROCHET SHOULDER BAG DESIGN

I designed this delicate and lightweight bag to use during the spring/summer months for those quick outings when all I want to carry is my wallet, keys and mobile. I needed something not too big and not too small, as well as not too heavy. I just love the way this THISTLE Bag turned out, simply perfect for my needs.

THISTLE Shoulder Bag crochet PATTERN includes written instructions for a bag with approx. circumference 20in (51cm) and 10in (25cm) deep; strap 38in (96cm). The pattern includes accompanying photographs at the end of the written instructions.

FLOWER POWER Crochet

crochet patterns, how to crochet, flowers, flora, motifs, home decore,

FLORA 2 CROCHET FLOWERS PATTERN

In May 2016 my inspiration for designing these little crochet flowers came from the spring blossoms my husband and I witnessed whilst on our walks through the countryside. I love how these naturally wild flowers can be so tiny and delicate. I am not trying to imitate their wild beauty exactly, I've just interpreted what I saw and created a crochet flower which will remind me of the original. I hope they will delight you just as much as they have delighted me.

ANIKSI - Springtime Crochet Bag

crochet patterns, how to crochet, afghans, bags, totes, patchwork,

Springtime Crochet Patterns

It's time to say arrivederci to the cold and gloomy days of winter, and start crocheting a few new accessories which will spruce up your spring/summer wardrobe and also your home decor.

Here is my spring/summer time crochet bag pattern for 2016. I am hoping it will inspire you all to get out your hooks and your favourite cotton yarns or threads, and allow those creative juices to flow!

This is a great pattern for using up all those odd remnants you have sitting in your stash.  It is exactly what I have done here with this bag creation.  I started with the afghan squares and then proceeded to design the rest of the bag, which took into account how much cotton yarn I had left of each colour.  Luckily I had an ample amount of white cotton yarn for my main colour (MC), because I really didn't want to be buying any extra just to finish this bag.  I am going to give this bag a cotton lining to extend the life of the bag and to help keep the shape, however it is always up to you to decide whether you line it or not.

I must admit it has taken me a while to finish writing up the pattern for this afghan bag, mainly because there have been other more important things happening in my life, and unfortunately, instead of posting this blog in May here I am posting it in August. C'est la vie!

ANIKSI Bag Crochet Pattern

This crochet Aniksi bag does not take very long to crochet, you can have it done in a few days, with plenty of summertime left to enjoy using it.  Come and give it a try and have some fun using up your cotton yarn stash!

MANDALA Blue Skies Crochet Pattern

how to crochet, mandalas, crochet patterns,

Sacred Geometry in Mandalas

Mandalas are seen as sacred places which, by their very presence in the world, remind a viewer of the immanence of sanctity in the universe and its potential in himself.  It is a means to discover divinity by the realization that it resides within one's own self.

How fascinating is this explanation of mandalas?  I thought it would be nice to know a bit about the origins of mandalas whilst I was designing this crochet pattern of Blue Skies MANDALA, so I searched for an explanation and came up with this, absolutely amazing, if you would like to read more please visit the website I mention above.

The preparation of a mandala is an artistic endeavor, but at the same time it is an act of worship. In this form of worship concepts and form are created in which the deepest intuitions are crystallized and expressed as spiritual art. The design, which is usually meditated upon, is a continuum of spatial experiences, the essence of which precedes its existence, which means that the concept precedes the form.

You could say that crochet mandalas are a spiritual art.

Often I create my crochet pieces intuitively, and never know where it will lead me, it can take me ages to complete these creations, because basically I just go with the flow when the inspiration comes forth. And this Blue Skies MANDALA, is the perfect example, I started it way back in 2014, and then left it to rest because I wasn't sure what the next round would be or even what colour, so I left it until I could reconnect with my creative guidance.  Now it is complete, and I can share it with you.
