Each year on July 14 France celebrates Bastille Day, it is a French national day and a major public holiday and traditionally considered as the symbol of the French Revolution.
Patriotic feelings break out throughout the country, French people wear blue, white and red, tricolore clothes and sing the Marseillaise (the French anthem).
Not only is Bastille Day celebrated in France but also in different places around the world, for instance, Sydney, Australia, New York, USA and South Africa and India.
And here in Whitstable, we celebrated the day with our friends at a private party, which included French food, wine and beer, plus French music and my favourite songs by Edith Piaf.
The Bastille Day party is the reason why I needed to make something in French patriotic colours to adorn my outfit with. I decided on a few red, white and blue flowers for my sun hat and a neck scarf for my husband, who ended up wearing the neck scarf as a hatband instead.
YARN TALK
Fortunately, I had some leftover cotton yarn in red, white and blue, except there was more white, than red and only a small amount of blue. So my design was limited in creativity due to the different amounts of yarn in each colour.
Yarn Used: King Cole Cottonsoft
MC - White (710); CC1 - Cherry (719); CC2 - Saxe (718)
Substitute Yarn: Any similar DK cotton yarn. Always check Yarnsub website for the best match.
On the first night, I made the neck scarf, using more red and white than blue.
Measurements:
Neck scarf measures approximately 42ins (107cm) in length after being stretched to fit my husband's hat, it is 3in (8cm) wide across Middle Section 2in (5cm) wide across narrow Tail Section and 4in (10cm) wide at widest point of Tail Section.

With MC and 4.5mm hook
MIDDLE SECTION of Neck Scarf
Foundation Row: FDC54, TURN.
Row 2: Ch1, sc to end, TURN.
Change to CC1
Row 3: Join yarn with standing sc, sc to end, TURN.
Row 4: Ch3, dc to end, TURN.
Change to CC2
Row 5: Join yarn with standing sc, sc to end, TURN.
Change to MC
Row 6: Join yarn with standing sc, sc to end, TURN.
Row 7: Ch1, sc to end.
Fasten off and hide ends.
Now work the other side of Foundation Row.
Row 8: Join CC2 with standing sc in first st, sc to end, TURN.
Change to CC1
Row 9: Join yarn with standing sc, sc to end, TURN.
Row 10: Ch1, sc to end.
Fasten off and hide ends.
Now work Tail Ends along each end of the Middle Section

Row 4 - 24: Continue changing colour every row on these 11sts.
Change to CC1
INCREASE ROW
Row 25: Ch1, 2sc in next st, sc to last st, 2sc in last st, TURN. (13sts)
Change to MC
Row 26: Ch1, sc to end, TURN.
Row 27-32: REPEAT Rows 25 and 26 another 3 times until you have 19sts.
DECREASE ROW
Row 33: Ch1, sc in next st, skip next st, sc to last 2sts, skip next st, sc in last st, TURN. (17sts)
Row 34-48: REPEAT Row 33 decreasing at each end of each row, ending with last row Ch1, sc in last st.
Fasten off and hide ends.
REPEAT SAME FOR OTHER END OF MIDDLE SECTION.
CONTRAST BORDER of Scarf
With CC2
Join yarn with standing sc near to the join of Middle and Tail Section, working from right to left across the Middle Section first, then continue all the way around the scarf, sc in each st, 3sc in each point of Tail ends, invisible join to beg. Fasten off and hide ends.
And on the second night, I created the flowers using more white and red again.
Measurements:
Flower measures 3in (7.5cm) in diameter.

BASTILLE FLOWERS PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS:
With CC1 and 4mm Hook
Rnd 1: Magic loop, ch1, 5sc in loop, join with sl st. (5sts)
Rnd 2: Ch1, 2sc in each st around, join with sl st. (10sts)
Rnd 3: Ch2 (counts as first hdc), 1hdc in same st, 2hdc in each st around, join with sl st. (20sts)
Rnd 4: Work in FL of each st. *Ch3, 1tr in same st, 2tr in next 2sts, [1tr, ch3, sl st] in next st, sl st in next st, rep from * around, invisible join to beg.
CHANGE to MC
Rnd 5: Work in BL of each st in Rnd 4. Join yarn in the centre back of any petal, *Ch4, 1dtr in same st, 2dtr in next 2sts, [1dtr, ch3, sl st] in next st, sl st in next st, rep from * around, invisible join to beg.
CHANGE to CC2
Rnd 6: Join yarn with standing sc around any sc of Rnd 1. Basically, insert hook from right to left around sc, like a FPsc, *[ch3, 1FPsc in next sc] rep from * around, invisible join to beg.
Hide all ends, leaving one 5in (13cm) yarn end, which you will use to sew the brooch pin onto the back of the flower.
