STAR LOVER Mandalas

how to crochet, STARS, crochet patterns, decorative crochet, mandalas, coasters, doileys,

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight.

Mankind has always looked to the stars for guidance, in navigation and in predicting how they will influence the future. Star shapes have also been used as symbols and the number of points on a star gives it special meaning. Star shapes appear on flags and in religions or you may have been born under a "lucky star". Whatever your fascination is with the stars you must admit we are all in awe of those shining specs of light up there in the deep emptiness of space!

You may well ask, What has this got to do with crochet?

And my answer will be, it has lots to do with crochet, have you seen how many crochet designs and patterns exist with some reference to star shapes? There are 5-point, 6-point, 7-point, 8-point, 9-10-11-12-point star shape patterns incorporated into blankets, shawls, rugs and mandalas, as well as individual star shape motifs added to numerous garments, bags, headbands, hats and garlands.

My Star Designs

During the last week, while the weather here in the south-east of the UK has been hot, hot, hot, I have been staying cool indoors, playing and having some fun with star shapes.

So far without trying too hard, I have come up with a collection of three (3) mandalas and each has been designed purposefully with a different number of star-points.

The first mandala is a 10-point star (a decagram), the second mandala is a 9-point star (an enneagram) and the third mandala is an 8-point star (an octagram).

Yarn Used

DMC Petra 5 is a beautiful mercerised cotton which is soft and subtle with a lovely sheen, and it is available in 60 colours. I love using this yarn for small creations. Therefore, the star collection is made quite simply with monochrome colours, one blue, one green and one pink. No colour changes within the star, however, you can go ahead and change colours at your leisure. Be creative and have some fun!

Unique Designs

Each one of these star mandalas is my own original and unique design, created just last week.

My plan is to design another three (3) star mandalas which will be available in a fortnight. You may want to come back and check those new mandalas out as well.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.
Try to make sense of what you see
and wonder about what makes the Universe exist.
Be curious.
And however difficult life may seem,
there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up."
Stephen Hawking
