SUMMERTIME Sun Hat

In the summertime when the weather is hot, you can stretch right up and touch the sky!

Anybody who was around in 1970 will remember this song, it was an instant hit around the world.

Way back then I was 17 going on 18 and most summertime weekends were spent at Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia, swimming and sunbaking, meeting up with our friends and checking out the beachside talent. Summertime was simply about getting a tan, relaxing and having fun.

Nowadays, it's all about minimal exposure and protecting ourselves from the sun with sunscreens and hats. I say bring back the 70's!

SUMMERTIME Sun Hat

Let me tell you about this sun hat, I made this sun hat years ago but never wrote up the pattern. A few weeks ago someone asked me about the pattern and where they could buy it, to which I had to answer that unfortunately, I hadn't written up the pattern. 

I was too busy with other things when I received the enquiry, however when I finally had time to think about it, I decided to give myself a challenge and using just the photo of the hat, I proceeded to crochet a new hat with a wider brim and an updated look, but in a 1970's style, colourful and fun.

YARN USED

I had some leftover yarn from making the SPRING Round Bag and the vibrant colours are perfect for this SUMMERTIME sun hat. You could wear them both at the same time they would match and compliment each other perfectly.

Wendy Supreme Luxury Cotton 4ply is 100% mercerised cotton with lovely colours available in white cream and pastels, as well as a few darker colours. It comes in 100g balls which is great for bigger projects.

You can substitute the yarn, just remember to check the Yarnsub website, to get the best match.

SUN HAT DESIGN

The Crown of the Hat is based on lace doily star or leaf pattern, and the Body of the Hat has a few window rounds to allow for ventilation, a drawstring is thread through the last window round so you can adjust the fit, and the Brim of the Hat is simply crocheted in single crochet and is 3in (7.6cm) wide, finished off with a lovely flower brooch.

SIZES:  One (1) size - Adult Medium ● Size adjustment hints in pattern.
MEASUREMENTS:  Circumference 21in (53cm); Length 6.7in (17cm) - will fit 22in (56cm)
YARN USED:  Wendy Supreme luxury cotton 4ply ● 100% Mercerised Cotton ● 100g ● 292yd (267m) ● MC Peppermint (1831); CC1 Avocado (1826); CC2 Salmon (1953) ● 1 ball of each
YARDAGE: Approx. 103g = 301yd (275m)
SUBSTITUTE YARN: Any similar mercerised cotton 4ply yarn. Always check with YARNSUB website to get the best match.
TENSION:  19sts to 4in (10cm) in hdc stitch
NOTIONS:  3.5mm hook, Yarn needle
PATTERN NOTES:  Hat is worked in the round. Instructions in this pattern are for a THREE (3) colour hat. Each round is completed before changing colour. Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of this pattern.
