Sunny days, Sun hats, Summer Crochet

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

WEATHER MAYHEM

Here in south-east England, well may you ask "where is the sun?" the weather is cold, windy and greywith the odd snow flurryYes, it is April and supposedly SPRING, however, there is no sign of it, those blasted north-easterlies are blowing and the jet stream just ain't getting here. boo hoo!

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

Never mind, I am ignoring what is happening outside and following my inner sunshine and here is the result, a new spring/summer hat, with a lovely little pattern, and a choice of brim lengths. Perfect for your little cutie pie to wear on sunny days.

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

PATTERN DETAILS:
YARN:  Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton 4ply OR Heirloom Cotton 4ply OR any other similar cotton yarn
HOOK: 3.5mm (E-4)
SIZES:  A - will fit 38-45cm (15-17.5in);  B - will fit 43-49cm (17-19.5in).
TERMINOLOGY:  USA and UK crochet terms

I just love crocheting with 4ply for infants and toddlers, it creates a delicate fabric, which I think is just perfect for tiny tots. And you just can't beat Bendigo yarns their cotton is so soft. I love it. They also do an 8ply cotton. Of course you could make these hats with the 8ply, you would just get a larger sized hat, or you could make adjustments and get the right size for your preferred head ircumference.

Have a go and play a little.

March in Spring

how to crochet, crochet patterns, hats, sun hats, spring, summer.

Vernal Equinox

Here in the northern hemisphere the vernal equinox for this year 2012, took place on March 20 at 1.40am.

YES it is the spring equinox, it is the start of spring, signs of spring, and stunning spring photos!

Ah, wonderful spring!  This blessed season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures and the rebirth of flora and fauna.

how to crochet, crochet patterns, hats, sun hats, spring, summer.

"equinox" is derived from the Latin word meaning "equal night".

The spring and fall equinoxes are the only dates with equal daylight and dark as the Sun crosses the celestial equator.

CROCHET TALK

AND IN MY WORLD, it is a time for the birth of new ideas and new ???
yes, you guessed it, new crochet patterns.

I have been busy designing and creating, a definite sign of spring fever, so many ideas and sketches and not enough hours in the day to crochet them all. A time when I wish I could split myself into 4 or more of me, so I can get on with all the ideas I have squirrelled away for the right moment in time!

OK, enough of wishing and dreaming, there is only one of me and this me also has a life outside of crochet, so NOW, let's get on with the crochet talk, SHALL WE?

Do you remember this pattern?  Crochet Hat VALENTINA

I designed it for cool spring wearing and wrote the pattern for Rowan Wool Cotton DK and/or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK.

You can also make this lovely spring hat in cotton, check it out BELOW

Made with Debbie Bliss Eco Baby 100% Organic Cotton and I added a different flower brooch.

OR HOW ABOUT making the hat with Rowan Pima Cotton And White/Metallic Gold cotton thread held together.

Looking good AND SUPER SPECIAL with the delicate metallic gold thread shimmering in the daylight, and ever so easy to wear!

Now you can do just the same using the original pattern, just adjust total stitch count to match head circumference and add or subtract a row or two, super simple. Go ahead have a play and have some fun with the Crochet Hat VALENTINA Pattern.

It's amazing how many different crochet hat looks you can achieve with just one pattern.
YOU CAN:-
  1. change colour
  2. OR use one colour
  3. OR two colours
  4. OR three or four colours
So let's get creative and have a PLAY.

AND you can also DO THIS (SEE PHOTO ABOVEmy version of a LOVELY CROCHET SUN HAT using the Crochet Pattern for the VALENTINA Hat.

This time I crochet the sun hat using Bendigo 8ply Cotton (also known as Heirloom 8ply Cotton)

I am not sure when I will be adding this pattern to the collection, but for now that is all.

I am currently in catch up mode with crochet pattern writing, so hopefully I will have more by next week.

Ciao, Ciao,  enjoy....

Summer Crochet !

crochet patterns, how to crochet, summer, hats, sun hats,

Temperature reliant handcrafts

Here in the UK crocheting during summer is easy, the summer temperatures are variable and this summer, it has been generally dry (OK so today and next few days looking wet) but generally it has been DRY and not very hot or warm for that matter, so sitting back and crocheting is not encumbered with sweaty hands or dripping brow and if it is warm on the odd day then rest assured I am out in the sunshine enjoying it and getting as much Vit D out of the day as I can.

Heaven (and God) only know when the sun is going to come out again and grace us with it's blessings!

Writers Block... and whinge!

Writing about the crochet on the other hand has been (in my case) constipated. Oh the reluctance to write about what I do, I'd rather be doing it. Then there are the photos to sort through and edit, the ho hum drudgery, and then trying to keep you all informed.  Did you know I am a "dot point" type of person?  You know -
  • take yarn and hook
  • make a hat
  • gift to friend
  • start next project
It's so easy, right?  not having to count stitches, explain every step, make sure it's understood, check and re-check, hours at the computer, so I can share with others!  who said this crochet life was easy?

Give me a map, a camera and I am off into the world exploring. And if my crochet hook travels with me, it may not see daylight for weeks.  So basically if I had the means, my first choice would always be "travel" and "adventure" and "the great outdoors".

Everyday Delights and Rewards

On the other hand the delight in receiving compliments and the rewards of sales is all worth it and I do like to share what little crochet knowledge I have with others, especially when people are interested enough to ask me about it, I recoil from forcing it down people's throats.

Anyway here now I am going to share my latest crochet projects and patterns, so you will know I have not been too idle!

Distraction project

In the midst of creating more summer hats with brims, like this lovely bucket-style (fisherman-style) hat called ZIGGY and which is available from my online store RAVELRY

crochet patterns, how to crochet, sun hats, summer, bucket hat, fisherman hat,

I decided to break away from my mindless hat making and try a bit of "filet" crochet. I had this very old pattern hanging around for a while, so now was the perfect opportunity, having just spent five (5) weeks of whirlwind travelling around the UK with my daughter (from Oz).

crochet patterns, how to crochet, Barbara Summers

I really felt the need to explore the unknown (for me anyway) world of filet crochet.

Crochet Rose Bag

The pattern is a small crochet bag with a rose design and dates back to the early 1910-1920's, I think.

crochet patterns, how to crochet, bags, rose filet, vintage,
Crochet Rose Bag - both sides done - ready to be joined.
So with my white cotton and metallic gold yarn and a 2.5mm hook (not the recommended size for the project) however I wanted my bag to be bigger than the original pattern, the original is made with Crochet Cotton No. 10 and crochet hook No. 8 (I think it's old UK steel hook size).

At first it was interesting to read the instructions and to ponder over how simple instructions were back in those days, here is an example:-

Ch105, Work three rows of 33 space each.
Row 4, 5sp, 4blk, 5sp, 1blk, 3sp, 1blk, 5sp, 4blk, 5sp,
and so on....

Obviously every young girl knew how to crochet back then, so there was no need for too much explanation in the pattern, just the basics.  Which I think is simply perfect, basic instructions, a bit like what and how I like to scribble my crochet notes, dot point. LOL

Filet crochet is really quite simple, all about spaces and blocks, just fill in the blocks and you have a design, even simpler follow the few basic instructions and then follow the chart. Quite an enjoyable little project, now all I have to do is line my bag, I must source a nice bit of material for it, still not sure on the colour, do I go dark to show up the pattern?  or go with a gold ? decisions, decisions.

Latest Designs

Feast your eyes on my latest summer designs, actually it's a bit of a revamp of one of my previous patterns.

crochet patterns, how to crochet, hats, summer,

The pattern is very close to completion, and will be released next week, do keep an eye open for it!  and yes, it will be available from on my RAVELRY online store.

Never Idle

Oh and just in case you thought I am or have been a bit lazy, check out today's walk, 7.5 miles along the Crab & Winkle Way from Whitstable to Canterbury.  Of course we took the bus back home, we were a bit soggy from the downpour which we walked through half way there.

Celebrations Over

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

Time to gather my thoughts

The Easter long weekend now seems so long ago, and the "big day" the Royal Wedding is now past history, and I am happy to report WE MANAGED TO CELEBRATE THE WEDDING IN STYLE.

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,
Celebrating the Royal Wedding - William and Kate

It is now time to get back to some serious crocheting before the next big calendar event, which will be the end of May and the arrival of my daughter from Australia woo hoo! I am so excited, to the point of distraction. It's a real effort to focus on new crochet designs right now, so many other things to get ready and to do.

New Crochet Hat Pattern

However, with all this extra-curricular activity I still managed to design another crochet sun hat, have a look.

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

The pattern is called "Crochet Hat SAILS" and is available from my RAVELRY store.

It is one of my favourite texture patterns, it looks like sails on the water or on the other hand it can also look like two-tone triangular leaves.

However you view this crochet stitch, it is definitely an interesting little textured pattern. PATTERN NOTE: This pattern requires patience, and would suit those with intermediate crochet skills.

Crochet Covers for Wedges

In the meantime, I have also been crocheting covers for my two foam wedges which I use to help support my lower back, especially good to use in the car, and a must when I am crocheting.

I used three strands of yarn for the cover mainly for strength and thickness.
crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

Aran Wool Blend in navy blue, a tan coloured 3ply and a multi-coloured blue 3ply yarn. Using up my stash yarns,  and crocheting with a 5mm hook to achieve a compact  fabric.  Especially since it will be sat on quite a bit!  LOL

The first cover is finished and already in the car, and I am now working my way through the second wedge cover,  which will be made with Cream Aran yarn instead of the blue and I will continue using the tan and multi-coloured blue (both these yarns are on cones).

Crochet Coffee Cozy

I am also in the final stages of crocheting a coffee cozy to fit a Bodum Coffee Plunger - slightly tricky it's for a friend and my coffee plunger is not the same size or style.

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

Here's a photo of "WIP" and I am hoping the colours will match her kitchen.

The yarn is Sirdar CROFTER DK "Fair Isle Effect" which of course when crocheted results in a totally different pattern to when knitted, also I used two strands held together for extra thickness, and using a 5mm hook for compact texture.

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

Crochet Flower Brooch

This week's "quickie" crochet project - my flower brooch for the jacket which I wore for the Royal Wedding celebrations.

crochet patterns, sun hats, flowers, how to crochet,

The centre of flower crocheted with two strands: one strand of Sirdar Snuggly "Baby Bamboo" a blend of 80% bamboo and 20% wool PLUS  one strand of cotton with gold metallic thread, for a hint of glitter.

Petals of the flower crocheted with Sirdar "Just Bamboo" 100% bamboo and using a 3.5mm hook for some rigidity, because the bamboo yarn is very soft and floppy.  The outer edge petals and the inner petals also edged in cotton and gold metallic single crochet for some sparkling contrast.

This flower pattern is available with my GREEN SHRIMP Hat Pattern, you can find it in my online stores.
ETSY            RAVELRY

So for now, that is it, I am furiously ploughing through the foam wedge cover and enjoying the spring weather.

Enjoy!
Ciao, ciao!
