My ARROW HEADS Saga

arrow heads, arrow stitch pattern, hats, mittens, scarf, headband, how to crochet, crochet ebook,

My lengthy hiatus!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Valentine's Day, to you all. I hope you all had an awesome time with family and friends celebrating these holidays.

It is now March and I apologize for a long three (3) months since my last blogpost ARROW HEADS CROCHET COLLECTION in November.

Between November and now there has been quite a bit going on in my personal life and I have not been able to crochet or knit since September 2018 (if you want to know more, click HERE, then scroll down to More Recently).

However, I am aimimg to catch up, by working on writing up some of my patterns which I designed and crocheted/knitted over a year ago and at the time I was unable to write up and share with you.

NEW CROCHET PATTERNS

I have finally added the last two (2) crochet patterns to my Arrow Heads Crochet Collection EBook, 1. Double Arrow Scarf and 2. Multi-Arrow Hat.

1. Double Arrow Scarf

Double Arrow Scarf is an easy, enjoyable crochet experience working back and forth, you should be able to make a quick scarf in no time and dare I say from one (1) ball of yarn (of course it depends what you use, but it can be done).

PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY: Easy
SIZES: One (1) size
MEASUREMENTS: Length 68in (173cm); Width 5.5in (14cm)
YARN USED: Lincraft Winter Warmth ● 100% Acrylic Mohair ● 50g ● 306yd (280m)
YARDAGE: Approx. 306yd (280m)
SUBSTITUTE YARN: Any Lace Weight mohair yarn.
TENSION: Approx. 18sts x 16 rows to 4in (10cm) in arrow stitch. Scarf is worked with larger hook and looser tension than recommended on label.
NOTIONS: 5.5mm hook, Yarn needle
PATTERN NOTES: Scarf is worked flat. Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of the pattern.

2. Multi-Arrow Hat

To finish off the collection I have included the Multi-Arrow Hat which uses the arrow pattern all the way around the body of the hat. If you use a yarn which changes colour gradually for the Arrow round you will get this cute multi-coloured hat, I chose a darker shade of plain coloured yarn to accentuate the awesome colours in the variegated yarn, I think this has to be my favourite!

PATTERN DETAILS:

DIFFICULTY: Easy Intermediate
SIZES: One (1) size - Hints on size adjustment at end of pattern
MEASUREMENTS: Circumference 20in (51cm) Length 7.5in (19cm)
YARN USED:
Hayfield Bonus Breeze DK ● 100% Acrylic ● 100g ● 306yds (280m) ● MC Embers (477)
Hayfield Bonus DK ● 100% Acrylic ● 100g ● 306yds (280m) ● CC Purple (840) ● 1 ball of each
SUBSTITUTE YARNS: Any similar DK yarn, one ball plain bold colour, one ball variegated colour. Always check with YARNSUB website to get the best match.
YARDAGE: Approx.: 41g = 125yd (114m);
TENSION: 22sts x 20 rows to 4in (10cm) in sc stitch
NOTIONS: 4mm hook, Yarn needle

PATTERN NOTES: Hat is worked top down in the round. Instructions are for a two (2) colour hat. Each round is completed before changing colour. Photographs accompany the written instructions at the end of this pattern.

Colours of Winter Sunrises

how to crochet, scarf, free crochet patterns, scarves,

MOMENTS IN TIME

Winter Sunrises are amazing - the grey clouds of dawn, the pink glow of daylight. Some times more orange, other times more magenta, yet always beautiful!

how to crochet, scarf, free crochet patterns, scarves,

MY FAVOURITE TIME OF DAY

I love being up to capture these moments, quite often they only last a short time and as soon as the sun starts to rise, either the clouds move in and all the glorious colours disappear or the glow of the sun eliminates the hues. So you have to be quick to capture the moment. When I am in a hurry to take the photo before the colours change and disappear I use my mobile instead of digging out my Fuji camera which then results in a mediocre photo.

The best time is when I have risen before the sun and the colours are just starting to appear, this is the time the Fuji is dug out of it's case and I delight in zooming in and out to capture segments of colour in the early morning skies.

Aren't they lovely colours?

YARN COLOUR INSPIRATION

So it is these beautiful winter sunrise colours which inspired my winter scarf design.

how to crochet, scarf, free crochet patterns, scarves,

I purchased these AMAZING coloured hanks of yarn by Debbie Bliss known as Andes. It was July 2013 at a 50% OFF SALE, almost a whole eight (8) months ago and it's taken this long to do something with them, it seems that life just got in the way. Honestly, I had no idea what I was going to make from these delightful three (3) hanks of colour, and then later I found and added another hank, the colour is fuchsia and it is just gorgeous, too beautiful to resist.

SPECIAL CROCHET DESIGNS

As you can see I have managed to use up the beautiful coloured hanks to make a lovely pair of fingerless mittens, SEE BELOW, and you can read all about these French inspired mittens in my previous post PARIS Crochet Mittens.

how to crochet, crochet patterns, fingerless mittens, gloves, mitts,

With the remainder of the yarn I crocheted a simple and easy scarf, I have called it ANDES after the name of the yarn. This is my special dress-up winter sunrise scarf and I am going to share the crochet pattern with you below.

Merino Wool all the way!

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I love merino wool and my latest favourite has to be James C. Brett
Pure Merino DK (update: which now goes by the name JW Pure Merino, the JW stands for Jenny Watson).  Check out the website here.

Luxuriously delicate to the touch and incredibly soft yarn made from 100% Merino Wool and available in a range of colours (18 approx).

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I've used this JW pure merino wool to make baby hats and mittens, adult hats, headbands, neck warmers and mittens, and I love how super soft it feels, without the scratchy feeling usually associated with natural wool yarns. simply I love, love, love it!

AND I have yet to find any other yarn similar, so if any one out there knows of a beautifully super soft pure merino, please let me know I would love to compare them.

JW Pure Merino Crochet Projects
I decided to make a silly pair of mittens which I have called "LOOPY" because of the loops within the pattern and of course a matching headband/neckwarmer.

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I first designed the mittens in late 2011, all in one colour, as you can see in photo below.

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

and then left the pattern sitting on the back burner because I just wasn't sure about them. Luckily last year I was playing around with my stash of odd balls of yarn and decided to make the mittens again but this time using two colours

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,
and what a surprise, they looked so much better with the two colour combination than with one, I much prefer the two colour combination and now I have ideas for all kinds of other stuff using this LOOPY design, just need to have the time to crochet them up.

TIME TO KNIT...

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A HOLIDAY

Every now and then, I need a break from crochet, it is in these moments I turn to my knitting and this time I wanted to knit something fast and super easy.

The best way to achieve this was with a CHUNKY YARN and an UNCOMPLICATED PATTERN. This is what I came up with, a knit hat with a chunky concertina style rib.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

I made this hat for my darling (naturally he always needs more hats) and because he is blessed with a bald head and has a sensitivity to natural yarns, I choose a 10% Wool 20% Alpaca 70% Acrylic yarn, which he can manage to wear without needing a cotton lining to protect his scalp.

NEEDLE SIZE

This yarn is super chunky and I did not use the needle size recommended on the yarn label, I dropped down a few sizes, quite a few actually. The label recommends a NEEDLE size of 10mm (US 15), however, I went ahead with a 6mm (US 10), which gave me a nice chunky warm hat (without big holes between stitches).

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

YARN WEIGHT

The yarn is Wendy "Serenity" Super Chunky 100g, 80m (87yd) and they have a nice selection of thirteen (13) colours - from cream to black, pink to purple, and teal to blue, basically enough colours to satisfy everyone.

I liked the look and feel of my husband's knit hat so much, I made myself one as well in purple, my favourite colour. Check it out below.
knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

The best thing about this knit hat pattern it is knit flat on straight needles, you don't need to use double-pointed needles, or circular needles, simply knit each row and then whip stitch the seam. AND it takes no time at all to complete. So, so easy, you have to give it a try.

SCARF YARN

I loved knitting this chunky concertina rib, I decided to use it in a scarf (cowl) pattern as well. However, this time I turned to my favourite circular needles and knit in the round and wow what a great scarf. The yarn is James C. Brett "Passion" Chunky, 100g, 146m (160yd), 70% Acrylic 30% Wool, the colours are fantastic and create a beautiful striped effect. I used two balls (200g) to make a scarf long enough to go around the neck twice. See photo below.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

I loved the subtle colour change, combined with the chunky rib so much, I made three (3) scarves. LOL!  Each scarf is a different colour, and I think they will end up under the Christmas tree for some lucky people.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

And for everyone else, I have written up the pattern, yes it is a KNIT pattern, NOT crochet, and yes it is my first KNIT pattern made public.

I hope you enjoy knitting these as much as I did.
