Resurrecting Old Crochet Hats

In the mid-1980's I remember my Polish mother-in-law, Henryka, showing me how to crochet in a spiral and how to add contrast surface-crochet. [Originally the surface-crochet was made using a slip stitch, however, over the years I have changed that to (slip stitch, ch1) instead, which I think is way better].

DIAMONDS are forever knit into a PONCHO

knit patterns, poncho with hood, diamonds, child, toddler,

This is my latest creation, a knit poncho with hood for my grandchild.  Knit diamonds pattern which is super easy.

My daughter and I both love aran style cardigans and sweaters, therefore an aran style poncho seemed like a good idea too.

If you know my work, you will know I prefer to focus on simple designs - so the question was - HOW EASY IS IT GOING TO BE? this aran style poncho?

I love a challenge, and love to create simple designs which look different and unique without too much hard work.  So coming up with a simple aran style pattern without having to use a cable needle was top of the list  with this poncho.

I searched high and low for ideas, in the end came up with two designs I liked and I would be happy using for the poncho.  Simple enough and not too taxing on the brain, however one did use a cable needle.

knit patterns, how to knit, poncho with hood, child, toddler, diamonds,

After consultation with my daughter, we decided on the diamonds. Super simple and no cable needle in sight.  And honeycomb and seed stitch will probably be used for a cardigan/sweater some time further down the track, when the grandchild is older.  Maybe, I think.

So DO YOU WANT TO KNOW where I found these two wonderful aran patterns?

OK, let's start with the first sample, at the bottom of the photo.
It's a honeycomb pattern with a seed stitch either side, which helps the honeycomb cable stand out.

I found it through Google search Images.  It is the "Otto Day Cardigan" by Beatrice Perron Dahlen.  You will find the lovely little design here THREAD & LADLE

And the second sample, the diamond pattern, guess where I found that?  You won't believe it - in my sweater drawer.  Yes, that's right a cotton sweater which I own has the diamond pattern in it.  And there I was searching all over the internet for something simple.  LOL

knit patterns, how to knit, diamonds, poncho with hood, child, toddler,

Now, without spending too much time checking it out, I am not sure how true to aran this diamond stitch pattern is?  I mean I can't find it anywhere, it doesn't use any crossed stitches or cable needle, it is just a simple knit and purl pattern.

Which is good news, right?  Simple and easy, and no cable needle in sight.

OK let's move to the important stuff - the pattern.

Sunny days, Sun hats, Summer Crochet

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

WEATHER MAYHEM

Here in south-east England, well may you ask "where is the sun?" the weather is cold, windy and greywith the odd snow flurryYes, it is April and supposedly SPRING, however, there is no sign of it, those blasted north-easterlies are blowing and the jet stream just ain't getting here. boo hoo!

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

Never mind, I am ignoring what is happening outside and following my inner sunshine and here is the result, a new spring/summer hat, with a lovely little pattern, and a choice of brim lengths. Perfect for your little cutie pie to wear on sunny days.

crochet patterns, sun hats, toddler, child, hats, summer,

PATTERN DETAILS:
YARN:  Bendigo Woollen Mills Cotton 4ply OR Heirloom Cotton 4ply OR any other similar cotton yarn
HOOK: 3.5mm (E-4)
SIZES:  A - will fit 38-45cm (15-17.5in);  B - will fit 43-49cm (17-19.5in).
TERMINOLOGY:  USA and UK crochet terms

I just love crocheting with 4ply for infants and toddlers, it creates a delicate fabric, which I think is just perfect for tiny tots. And you just can't beat Bendigo yarns their cotton is so soft. I love it. They also do an 8ply cotton. Of course you could make these hats with the 8ply, you would just get a larger sized hat, or you could make adjustments and get the right size for your preferred head ircumference.

Have a go and play a little.

STRIPES ARE US!

Mourning stripes..

Early last week, in the very early hours of the day, whilst attempting to update my website, my laptop expired.

Various attempts at revival failed dismally with the annoying beeping sounds bellowing from the black screen.

With despair and disbelief, I reluctantly accepted the inevitable - a trip to the local "fix it" place.  A mere two hours later and the bad news hailed - the motherboard - "she is kaput" - and considering the age of the laptop (44 months) plus the cost of labour, advice was that I be better to replace it with a new laptop!

Basically I was NOT happy!

All my docs where retrieved and downloaded onto my external hard drive and 24hrs later I took possession of the remains.

To console myself, what else could I do but crochet, and inbetween I had to spend time getting up to speed with my husband's laptop, with all it's bells and whistles, and Windows 7.  Nothing like getting taken out of my comfort zone, having to download software I had become dependent on and familiar with, and having to share a laptop. OMG !

Simple pleasures!

So with all the technological stuff going on I really needed an escape into a  simple creative project and I found myself creating a simple stripes pattern which can be used in a number of ways.

Firstly, I will introduce you to the Crochet Hat "Simple Stripes"

It is the perfect sun hat - bucket style with alternating colours and varying stripe widths. Absolutely simple and all you need is a knowledge of colour change.

PATTERN DETAILS:
Basic stitches are single, half double and reverse crochet.
YARN:  King Cole "Bamboo Cotton"
HOOK: 4.5mm

SIZE:  The hat will fit 45.5cm (18in) to 50.8cm (20in) head circumference.
TERMINOLOGY: Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Included is the "Flower Brooch" pattern and an adjustable drawstring for the perfect fit.
This pattern can be adapted to other yarns.

Secondly, is the Crochet Hat "Persimmon Stripes"

A simple crochet hat pattern with a turn-up brim and Perfect Heart Brooch and featuring the alternating colours and varying stripe widths.

PATTERN DETAILS:
YARN: Rowan "Belle Organic DK"
HOOK: 4.5mm
SIZES: The hat will fit 44.5cm (17.5in) to 48cm (19in) head circumference.
TERMINOLOGY: Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Included is the "Perfect Heart Brooch" pattern.
This pattern can be adapted to other yarns.

Thirdly,  to cater for the little boys in our lives Crochet Hat "Bucket Stripes"

It is the brother of Crochet Hat "Simple Stripes" -  the perfect bucket sun hat for your little man, with alternating colours and varying stripe widths.

PATTERN DETAILS:
YARN: Bendigo Cotton 8ply
HOOK: 4.5mm
TERMINLOGY: Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Included is a "Starfish Motif" pattern and an adjustable drawstring for the perfect fit.

This pattern can be adapted to other yarns.

Optimism reins!

So, there you have it... whilst one door had closed (laptop dying), another door had opened (a flurry of crochet hat patterns) now on with the not so interesting stuff, proof-reading the pattern and checking, checking, and re-checking. Ho Hum!

Ciao! Ciao!

Blossom time

Spring is here and the blossoms are popping out all over, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, snowdrops, pansys, cherry blossoms. I am so excited!

I love getting out and seeing what is about to blossom next, just love this time of year.
